Winter 2009 - Present Freelance Software Developer

Provided a range of services including but not limited to web-application, website, and blog theme development. Audited Government of Alberta applications and assisted with a GoA server migration. Performed a complete rebuild of the ContentMover application, originally developed at Smibs Inc.

Spring 2007 - Winter 2009 Lead Developer & Chief Technical Officer Smibs Inc., Edmonton, Alberta www.smibs.com

Smibs offers a range of products serving small to medium-sized businesses. Lead developer and co-founder responsible for the technological implementation of the business vision. Managed the entire product development life cycle from determining software requirements to product launch and continued post-release development. Led a team of three developers, including hiring, scheduling and task assignments. Contributed articles regularly to the company blog. As CTO, I was directly involved in the development of five Smibs products: the Smibs Network, Doorbell, ContentMover, VideoLobby, and SmibsTV. Key features included a highly interactive web interface, gathering tasks and messages across multiple applications & servers, an online contact management system with a complex permission system, e-mail dropboxes, automated monthly billing, image processing and web crawlers.

Of particular note:

VideoLobby: VideoLobby launched at the Realtime Crunchup conference, hosted by TechCrunch in San Francisco, Nov 15, 2009.

ContentMover (private beta): Originally developed for a single client project, this internal tool proved so successful that Smibs has partnered with industry experts Yellow Pencil to develop a commercial product.

Designed websites, templates and custom applications for clients. Developed a wide range of applications including contact management, company intranet, video streaming, and other custom applications. Worked with our German office on a number of projects for European clients.

Summer 2006 Software Research (Internship) University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta

Worked under Professor Dr. Witold Pedrycz, Canada Research Chair in Computational Intelligence, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Created a graphic user interface for a pattern recognition algorithm. Developed a Visual Basic application to analyze several dimensional reduction techniques. Rewrote lab sections of a computer-engineering course (CMPE 320 Software Testing).

Summer 2005 Software Research (Internship) University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta

Researched artificial intelligence using distributed systems under the supervision of Dr. Marek Reformat, Director of Computer Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Research funded by a grant from CFI (Canada Foundation for Innovation) and ISRIP (Innovation and Science Research Investments Program). Studied concept recognition using associative memories, and developed frameworks for construction of distributed systems, and neuro-based systems. Additional development on hardware/software interface and biologically inspired image processing based on the visual cortex.
